Instructions for speakers

So you decided to do a talk at Montréal-Python. Congratulations!

First, you should take a look at the Speaker's Tips and Tricks.

Two weeks before your talk, you should have a solid outine and you should send your title to the organizers; they are just about to publish the blog post on the event.

Three days before the event, your slides should be done. If not, it's a good time to do all all nighter on these. You will need to get some rest the night before the event.

On the day of the event:

  • email the organizers to tell them that you are OK and that you'll be there on time
  • bring the VGA that fits your laptop if you need one
  • arrive 45 mins before the first presentation
  • introduce yourself to the master of ceremony (the MC)
  • try your laptop with the project (you'd be surprised how many laptop won't work with some tweaking)
  • go to the washroom
  • go back to your seat and relax
  • when the MC calls your name, grab the mic, clip it to your shirt, and hook your laptop to the projector
  • spot the person with the timer
  • give a damn good talk
  • finish before your time runs out; don't steal time from other presenters

It's your responsibility to finish before the timer runs out and to keep some time for the questions. If you give a 5 minutes presentation, you should avoid taking any questions. You simply won't have time. Invite members of the audience to meet you at the break or at the pub instead.

You don't have to use slides. Use the white board or simply give a good speech. If you have slides but that you don't have a laptop, email your slides in PDF format to the organizers one day before then event and bring them on a USB stick. If you plan on using the white board, bring you own markers. Also note that there probably won't be any wifi available; plan accordingly.

If you have any problem with your preparation, let the organizers know as soon as possible.
